remember, repent, return
In Jesus’ message to the church in Ephesus in Revelation 2, He praised them for their toil and perseverance; their intolerance for evil; their diligence to test the word; their endurance for His namesake. In so many ways they were doing well, and yet there was one crucial thing the Lord Jesus had against them (verse 4):
“…that you have left your first love.”
They had great works but dim, dull hearts. They had forgotten to tend to the flame of love for the very One they were serving.
The hour of Jesus’ coming is drawing ever closer, and He has made it clear in His Word what and who He is searching for:
“But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers.”
JOHN 4:23
Today, we feel the draw from the Holy Spirit to prepare our hearts for Him. Like the Ephesian church, it is so easy to do many things excellently, but forget to love Him first. What worship and service can start in the tender flame of love may be relegated to a lifeless religious form and function, dry branches disconnected from the Vine.
In Luke 12:35, Jesus told His disciples in a parable: “Be dressed in readiness, and keep your lamps lit.”
